The revolutionary discovery that the orbital layers of the extraocular muscles insert not onto the eyeball, but into fi bromuscular pulleys that guide the orbital layers, provides explanations for the kinematic properties of eye rotations and clinical fi ndings in some patients with strabismus. The demonstration that all extraocular fi bers types, except pale global fi bers, lack synaptic folding provides an explanation for why saccades may remain fast in patients with limited ocular mobility due to myasthenia gravis. More than one mechanism may account for the observation that patients with disorders affecting the eye muscles or their nerves can present with the appearance of central disorders of ocular motility, such as internuclear ophthalmoplegia. New approaches to analyzing saccades in patients with disjunctive eye movements provide the means to identify disorders affecting the peripheral or central components of the ocular motor system, or both.

متن کاملCommutative saccadic generator is sufficient to control a 3-D ocular plant with pulleys.
One-dimensional models of oculomotor control rely on the fact that, when rotations around only one axis are considered, angular velocity is the derivative of orientation. However, when rotations around arbitrary axes [3-dimensional (3-D) rotations] are considered, this property does not hold, because 3-D rotations are noncommutative. The noncommutativity of rotations has prompted a long debate ...
متن کاملA 3-decade Activity of the Central Eye Bank of Iran
Purpose: To report a 3-decade eye bank data and activity of the Central Eye Bank of Iran (CEBI). Methods: All the eye bank records in terms of procured eyes, utilized tissues, corneal transplants per capita, and indications for keratoplasty over the last 3 decades were analyzed. Results: During the last 27 years, 115 743 whole eyes were donated, among which 114 169 eyes were donated between 199...
متن کاملOrbital Myiasis
PURPOSE To present a case of massive orbital myiasis. CASE REPORT An 87-year-old debilitated woman suffering from left ocular pain of four days' duration presented with a severely necrotized left orbit and several attached live larvae. The upper and lower eyelids and the eyeball were completely destroyed. She had history of eyelid surgery in the same eye due to a skin lesion, apparently some ...
متن کاملMorphometry of the orbital region soft tissues in Down syndrome.
The orbital region of subjects with Down syndrome (DS) has been scanty described so far. We wanted to detail the morphologic characteristics of the soft tissue orbital region in Italian and North Sudanese subjects with DS. The three-dimensional coordinates of 10 landmarks on the orbital soft tissues were obtained using computerized anthropometry in 53 Italian and 64 North Sudanese subjects with...
